Strong January follows stellar hotel performance in 2015

February 22, 2016

Australia’s events calendar has seen an impressive start to the year for Melbourne’s hotels. The Australian Open boosted city occupancy rates of over 90% and average rates were up 36% to $238 during the tournament, according to STR Global figures.

A strong start to 2016 followed a stellar 2015, according to STR. Sydney and Melbourne’s five-star hotels were major benefactors, with occupancy rates increasing more than 2% in both cities. Hobart’s renaissance continued on the back of growth in tourism, but mining-reliant cities such as Perth, Darwin and Adelaide showed some weakness in occupancies and rates.

REVPAR across all hotels in Sydney rose 12.7%, Melbourne (10.6%), Hobart (11.3%), the Gold Coast (10.4%) and Cairns (6.7%).
