Hotel giants consolidate

November 24, 2015

Global hotel giant, Marriott International Inc. has agreed to acquire Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. for US$12.2 billion, a combination that will create the world’s largest hotel group with more than 5,500 hotels, 1.1 million rooms, 30 brands and a global presence that includes a well-established network of hotels across Australia.

Industry commentators have seen the move as a clear signal that hospitality companies view mass scale as critical for their ability to compete strongly against online travel agents as well as ‘disruptors’ such as Airbnb.
